When we all look back on the 2008 season
there is only thing that will stand out
– the Diggers took control of the
competition and everyone that they
played knew that they’d loose. Everyone
that is, except the Coat Hangers. It
would be safe to say that the Hangers
have been a bogie teams for Andrew: “Is
this a dream? I’m sure this has happened
before …” If we cast our minds back to
the 2005 Season. The Diggers and the
Coat Hangers finished 1 & 2 and that’s
how the Grand Final played out … and
like this week, back then Nick Riewoldt
stood up to throw a dagger right into
the heart of the Diggers coaching staff.
“Yeah we’re disappointed, but we have
another chance this week to make the
Grand Final but the Sons wont make it
easy for us”.
“We’re over the moon … the boys will
enjoy the week off and we’ll get
together later in the week to watch the
game and see who’s going to met us in 2
weeks time.” Most things seem to go
right for Tony this week with Fevola and
Riewoldt both having good games, but
there’s still room for improvement.
Newman who has been starting was rested
this week and picked up 23 kicks and
Power can only improve on his 11 kicks.
This team must be taken seriously and
this week they proved that they aren’t
there just to make up numbers.
The Sons of God will now meet the
Diggers in this weeks Prelim Final, the
last time these two teams meet in a
Prelim Final was last season – where the
Sons got up. “We’ve got some work this
week on the track, we had some players
down this week, but it was good to get
up against some tough competition.”
Bartel said after the game. The Sons
aren’t flying right now but you can
never count this team out, and with Ben
McAllister at the helm we know that
something will be done to correct this
over the next 5 days.
Once again it was the Nexus backline
that failed to fire … with Johncock
playing forward again and the (some what
controversial) key back of the year
Fletcher getting injured early it was
always going to be a tough game. “One
thing that came out of this game was
that we need another string of players
in some positions. We finished second on
the ladder … but that means nothing when
you’ve just lost 6 games in a row and
you go out of the finals in straight
sets.” With Ablett back into some form
and Adcock finding his feet at tagger
the spine of this team looks good for
many years to come.
The Marvels managed to make the
Scorpions weekend even worse as they got
up in the AFR Cup. The 2008 season for
the Marvels has been anything but one to
remember - last week they were fighting
out the toilet bowl (in which they
lost). However, the AFR Cup has been a
happy hunting ground for them over the
past seasons … this is their second time
they’ve held the cup up. CONGRATS TO
THE 2008 AFR CUP WINNERS: MCAVANEAN
MARVELS.
