I cannot remember any AFR manager actually talking about the possibility of the treble of the AFR Cup-Champion's League-Premiership. I have assumed that is because we all know how hard it is to even win one of those three, and that only three teams have ever managed to win two of three (Natas in 2007 won the Cup and OL Premiership; the 2009 Dingoes the CL-OL Premiership; the 2009 Coat Hangers won the Cup and SL Premiership); and that the sheer combination of consistency and luck required to pull off all three was before this year unthinkable. However, the Dingoes have achieved the unthinkable in 2011, and only the coming years of history will tell the story of whether this was a truly remarkable achievement, or whether it may become more common for sides to claim the treble in the future. However, for now, the Dingoes have become the the first team to "clock the game."
The Scorpions deserved better. Losing the fit Franklin, Birchall and Watson (bye) for the critical game, and still missing 2009 Commish Medalist, Corey, was ultimately detrimental. We will never know how many goals Buddy would have kicked or kicks Birchall have had - they both smashed the Chargers a week earlier. But the losing margin in the end was enough to make one wonder if their inclusions may have tilted the scale. Ultimately the remaining Scorpions didn't stand up. Only Giansiracusa, Goldstein and Murphy got around their averages, the rest were below, sometimes badly. The Dingoes had many down players too. Sandilands, Black and Cloke all threw up close to their worst games for the year! But Gibbs, Pendlebury and Petrie all were clearly above their average, and Didak, Ball, Reid and Hurn were thereabouts, and with players of their ilk, that is enough. Sadly for the league, the duopoly stretches into its eighth year with only the hope being that the Dingoes can't win any more than they did this year. Well may they call him the Guru...
